Kennedy Announces Campaign Promises for Bitcoin
Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made campaign promises on Friday advocating for bitcoin users, adding that he plans to accept campaign donations in bitcoin. Kennedy, who is the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and the son of Robert F. Kennedy, announced his run for US president last month and has been vocal in his support for crypto calling them a “major innovation engine.”
Kennedy notably said that bitcoin is not a security and should not be regulated as one saying, “Bitcoin is in a class by itself” – something which US Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler confirmed during an interview with the Intelligencer in February 2021. Additionally, he promised to ensure that the US “remains the global hub of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies” while carefully considering whether Ross Ulbricht was “prosecuted for actual crimes or as a means to crack down on crypto.” He stated if they had been unjustly made an example he would consider pardoning them – something which Ulbricht received a double life sentence in 2015 for creating Silk Road darknet marketplace . Lastly, Kennedy announced on Friday that he would be accepting Bitcoin donations through Lightning Network – making him first presidential candidate ever do so – something which Republican Rand Paul mentioned back in 2015 but never acted upon it .
The Lightning Network is decentralized payment system enabling instant payments between two parties without having to trust each other or even go through third-party services like banks or payment processors . It makes transactions faster than traditional systems by settling payments off blockchain .
By announcing these promises, Kennedy showed his commitment towards making cryptocurrency mainstream while ensuring their rights are respected . With such strong support from leading figures within politics , we can expect more advocacy around this space going forward .
Bitcoin has come along way since its inception over 10 years ago , now being accepted as legal tender by governments all across world as well leading candidates running for highest office doing same . We can only hope this trend continues as we enter new era of digital economy .
